“It’s hard to impress me with chicken.” Ms. Lin is going to tell a bedtime story for the kids and they are taking a nap. Ms. Lin opened up the book and started to read. Long ago there was a story about a rooster who wanted to be lined up in the Chinese Zodiac. He had a golden voice that could be used in the early morning to wake up the people in their bed, but the Jade Emperor doesn’t see him very useful at that time, because at that time period the Emperor was selecting the zodiac animals and they only allowed to walk, not birds, horses, cattle, sheep and dogs were all included, but there was no rooster. That made the Rooster very anxious and confused, so he ended up in trouble and fought with other animals around him.
Then one day he was walking by and saw a horse who had been enshrined as a Chinese Zodiac sign, then he went up to him and asked the horse “What talent do you have that made the people honor you?” the horse replied “I charge into battles during wars and I could transport goods from place to place, that is why the people are honored by me”.
After hearing what the horse had said about why they honored him, the rooster thought about it and finally he remembered that he could still use his golden voice to wake up the people. So everyday at dawn, the rooster got up very early and sang to wake people up from their dreams. As the day went by the people were very grateful that the Rooster used his voice and woke them up every morning.
On the day of the competition for the zodiac, the rooster and the other animals walked together, and they were about to reach the heavenly place. Suddenly the dog saw the rooster was ahead and tried running faster, so the dog could be in front of the rooster. The rooster saw this happen, so he flew and jumped in front of the dog and the rooster who were lined up in the tenth place of the Chinese Zodiac, so the dog ended up behind the rooster who lined up in eleventh place.
