“There ain’t no sky today,” my mom said while looking up at the dark clouds. There had been tornado warnings screaming all night, thunder crackling outside my window, and lightning blinding me all morning. It was unusual to look outside and not see clouds or blue, just black. I tried to act like it was just a normal day but I couldn’t help but think, how bad is this going to get. Before I knew it, the storm started to get more intense. The wind whined as if it were a child who had just got their toy taken away, sending me into a shiver. The rain started to pelt the roof, every drop sounding like a hammer pounding a nail. The power started flickering, the room went dark for a brief moment, and my heart started to race. During all the chaos, I could hear sirens in the distance echoing through the storm. My mother tried to reassure me that everything was going to be okay; however, I could see the worry in her eyes. I clutched my blanket tightly, trying to not panic as the storm continued to rage on. I closed my eyes and tried to breathe deeply. In this moment, I felt a strange sense of calmness, almost like the world outside had come to an end; I was alone with only my thoughts and the melody of the storm.
