“You’ve got a college degree? What are you doing here?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, what is someone with a degree working retail? Can’t you find something better?”
“I don’t know. I’ve been working here for nearly a dozen years. It pays well, and I like it.”
“Oh come on, James, don’t you ever want, I don’t know, more?”
“Like what?”
“You have a doctoral degree, you could be a doctor. You can’t seriously tell me this is the life you want.”
“Well it is. I like it here. The pay is enough.”
“James, you’ve known me for how many years?”
“Seventeen? Eighteen? Something like that. Your point being?”
“I mean, I know you. You’re a smart guy. You didn’t get one job like 3 years ago and never tried again. It’s sad, really.”
