Waves of Silence

I’m just trying to figure out how to function in this chaos.
I’m watching below as people are dashing for buildings, crying out for help.
The forces of nature conspire against us, motions of the waves,
I can see the silhouettes of different vessels piercing the crests.

I can smell the scents of burning, and the fumes of petrol leaking from vehicles,
The combination of liquifying plastic searing into the ocean’s burning fire,
I can taste the bitter flavor in the air, the salt of the ocean draining my senses.
The air escapes my lungs as I grasp my chest in fear.

I feel helpless in this display of destruction.
I can’t help those crying out, I can only wait for my demise,
The chaos causing vibrations below.
The wave will soon strike me off my feet.

I can feel the wave rushing closer,
Is there any way I can survive?
I’m on the 3rd floor.
If I rush to the top I might have a chance.

Those I know behind me as I’m running up the stairs,
A unit together, we are one,
Our life depends on this.
We must climb to the top.

Chaos ensuing below as we rush to the rooftop,
The wave creeping closer to the building,
We made it.
We finally made it to the top.

The sounds of people’s voices, horrifically muted by the waves,
Someone shouted, “GET ON THE GROUND”,
The wave shatters the bottom beneath us, their voice entombed in my mind,
Our faces scarlet, our bodies pulsing with terror as we collapse to the ground.

The building begins to rupture,
Then we hear it,
The sounds of helicopter blades slicing the air above us.
We hear shouting above us,
They are here to save us all.
Fear disperses as we step foot on the helicopter.
The final moment before I vanish
