“I can’t take you to the park sweetie because the Giants are about to start playing.”
She pouted, her bottom lip growing larger, slightly quivering. “You always say thatttt,” She whined, her eyes looking back at one of the many entrances of central park. “Well its not my fault you always want to go during my time.” He groaned. The woman walking by scoffed quietly, looking back at the little girl walking hand in hand with her older brother towards a run down looking apartment building. “I’ll take you tomorrow, I promise.” Another broken promise made by him, I mean who is she really supposed to trust?
“Yeah yeah.” She grumbled, entering the apartment where her mom stood cooking dinner, dad on the couch with the TV blasting out commercials before the “big game”. “Hey honey! Did you have fun at the park?” Moms chipper voice spoke as she turned, an apron hung on her small body like a child wearing their fathers shirt. “Yeah, so much fun.” She spoke in a fake-enthusiastic way, when all she did was go to a basketball court. Mom always told her brother to take her to the park but he never did, he just wanted to play basketball and never let her out of his sight for a moment.
The next day they walked hand in hand down the street, passing by the same entrance of central park like they did every day. She didn’t even bother to say anything, eyes focused on her used-to-be sparkly shoes. “You’re not going to ask me?” He prodded looking down at her before spotting the basketball court in the distance. “What’s the point?” “What if I say yes?” She didn’t get her hopes up until the two crossed the street, walking towards the entrance of the fence. Her eyes widened, looking up at him with hope as they walked through. Her hand shot out of his, running towards the amber coloured leaves on the ground that were raked neatly in piles. His hands sat in his pockets, a smile on his face as he watched his sister finally have the fun in the park she’s been asking for.
