“You’ve got a college degree? What are you doing here?”
The expectations are high when you soar above the clouds
And watch all the forlorn souls after graduating from college.
Recently graduated with an art history or liberal arts degree,
Leaves a slim chance to discover a job with a fair pay.
After all of the college debt has been accumulated,
The stars might not shine as bright as usual,
The waves of the ocean might be overcome by a loudness in your mind,
When will you ever find the time to sit back and rhyme poems?
All you can think about is paying your rent for the month.
It is not unusual for you to have a second job,
And maybe you are at peace with that fact,
To work as a waitress, or a bartender,
But maybe you just want a break from all of the rowdy blaring that comes out of your window,
To view the world in complete stillness.
Yet, you can view the landscape of mountains and trees differently than anyone else
And the songs of birds might mean something different to you,
You will soon learn,
The world is full of perspective
You will soon see that your life is filled with so many blessings.

This poem flows really well, and I like how you delve into the positive aspects of the speaker’s education—even though they may not have the career they might have envisioned, they still see the world through curious eyes and count every blessing.

I like that the end of your poem took a positive spin highlighting that even though there are obstacles to overcome, there is always a positive, even if it is hard to see. The last line, “You will soon see that your life is filled with so many blessings”, is very impactful!

I really love the message of this, and that you kind of focused the piece on the fact that there’s much more than success and school and jobs in life, and that there is more beauty to be found in the world.
