The Price of a Genius
People were trying to tell him he was a genius.
His mind, overflowing with ideas,
A crown of knowledge was forced onto his head.
Unable to take it off.
Bound to his mind,
Drowning him in expectations.
A shadow before himself,
Wanting to blend into the crowd, another meaningless name.
Every praise became a heavy weight.
Pulling him down, deep into their desires.
Wishing to be normal, unobserved,
Struggling to step down from the pedestal.
Dreaming of silence.
They said he was a genius.

I like the phrase “crown of knowledge”. The poem expresses a different side of being called a genius, which is it’s not always a good thing.

I like the way you described “the crown” as a metaphor for the pressure. It really set a clear theme throughout the poem and well conveyed the burdening sensation the character feels.

I like the emotion behind your words, and how you allow the reader to understand these feelings without saying them outright.

I like the way you made it into a poem, it was really good, and I could understand what it’s saying.

I like the continuous metaphor/description of the feeling of being dragged down, “Drowning him in expectations”, “Pulling him down, deep into their desires”, as well as the general use of height. While he feels like he is being dragged down, he is really being placed up upon a pedestal. That sort of dichotomy or contradiction works really well to exemplify how the subject’s desires and feelings contradict those of the people who expect so much from him.
