“I thought I could make it. I really thought I could make it.”
Two months ago, when I was in Spain, there was a competition. My friend and I took part in a drawing competition. The competition stated that there would be three winners. Third place would win three hundred euros, second a trip to a Spanish island, and first one thousand euros and their work would be presented to the entire city.At first I didn’t even want to take part in it. But my teacher said that I should definitely try because it can be a good experience. I agreed with her and registered for the competition.
I had no faith at all that I would be able to take any of the first places. But when I came to the gathering place with my friend, we found only three elderly men. We were a little excited, thinking we might have a chance to win when we saw one of the elderly men painting. But we were confused by the fact that all of them had bought their own canvases. Although the competition organizers told us before the competition that they would provide us with all the materials that we would need, we even clarified this information with them a couple of times and they confirmed it. We immediately went to the office, there in the office, they were not waiting for us at all. Two elderly women working there were very rude to us. Of course they didn’t say why they behaved like that with us, so we can only guess, so I think it could be because of age, but more likely because we are not Spanish, but foreigners. They told us that we need to buy all the materials by ourself. It was pretty difficult because at eight am all shops were closed. We took regular paper and watercolor paint just in case. So we decided to work with these materials.
We picked a place and started to work. The time was limited, we had only two hours, and it was so hard because for large and beautiful work people usually need four to five hours of course with breaks. I was working so hard, I thought I could make it, I was hoping that at least I could get 3rd place. But it turned out that we did not have the materials they required, and we also did not have canvases. So the judge took all the points from us and gave first place to someone else. I was very upset because all our works were good in their own way. It was very unfair. We wasted our materials because the judges didn’t even look at our works. And I had such hopes for winning because I motivated myself and I really thought I could make it.
