“It’s not like it used to be… you can’t mess around anymore.” I said, after the three hour drive I just endured.
“I am so hungry, just pull off and get some Mcdonald’s or something.” Dad responded, “But that is not like it used to be though! We cannot just pull off and get food, there is always something in the way to get food. Also, it is so much more expensive!” At this point, I felt like I was going to die from starvation. It was because I was the idiot that forgot to eat the entire day because I wanted to sleep in longer.
After 15 minutes, messing around with him to make it so I can get food seemed like it was not going to go anywhere. Dad was stubborn, and wanted to make a message I had to learn from. It made me angry though, it is not a big of a hassle that he was making it up to be. Dad then looked at me and said, “Let’s get a few more miles up the road, and then I’ll get off and get you food.”
At this point, I was happy. I was finally going to get food, I felt like I was dying. But one thing that I figured out is that Dad was going to scare me first. Got into the far left lane of the highway, and heard his foot hit the floor. The car roared to life and started accelerating at an alarming rate. I looked back at him, concerned and yelled over the noise of the engine, “Why are you going so damn fast now?”
Dad replied, “We need to go further.”
“But why are you going at this speed?”
“Let’s have a little bit of fun.”
Dad started weaving around traffic, and it was to the point where the car was having body roll from the speed that it was going.
Then the car nearly missed a car by inches. I said, “Oh my god! Slow down.” It seemed like I did not say anything at all since he did not slow down at all.
Then, it happened. It is something that I will never forget. When we hit the bridge, there was ice on it.
Dad lost control of the car, and went over the edge. It was like in slow motion. I looked at him, shocked. Dad looked back at me with the same emotionless expression. Almost when we hit the ground is when everything went into fast motion again. We somehow landed upright and did not bottom out that bad. Which was shocking when the bridge was over ten feet down. The airbags went off and got hit hard with them. Somehow though, Dad was able to get the car slowed down and stopped.
Dad did not say anything. It registered in his head what happened. He was now shocked at the moment of what just happened. But when I looked up over the airbag, I saw something that humored the both of us. There was a Mcdonald’s right in front of us.
After looking around and getting out of shock, Dad started laughing and pointed in front of us and said, “Let’s get our Mcdonald’s and worry about what happens with the car later.”
“Okay sounds good, wow.” I replied. He just looked at me and laughed and walked right into the Mcdonald’s.
That is how I got the most terrifying Mcdonald’s of my life.
